According to police, a tiny plane carrying ten people crashed near the city of Gramado in southern Brazil on Sunday morning, killing everyone.
In a statement issued by the Rio Grande do Sul State Government, the Brazilian state in which Gramado is situated, Governor Eduardo Leite revealed during a press conference on Sunday that 17 more individuals had been sent to regional hospitals with injuries.
According to the statement, two of the injured victims are being transported to Porto Alegre due to their bad conditions. The majority of the injured were transported to the hospital due to smoke inhalation from the crash-caused fire, according to a previous statement from the Rio Grande do Sul administration.
The ten fatalities to far were all members of the same family and were all passengers on the aircraft.
Whether there were more people on the plane was not immediately apparent.
According to a statement from the governor’s office, the disaster happened between 9 and 10 a.m., not long after the plane took off from Canela Airport. After colliding with a building that was still under construction, the plane crashed into a furniture store. A motel close to the highway was also struck.
“I express my sincere regret for the incident and draw attention to the security forces’ prompt response in treating and rescuing the wounded as well as managing the accident site. In the statement, Leite stated, “At this point, we must formally identify the victims and look into the circumstances surrounding the accident.”
According to him, the security forces would “closely monitor the progress of this case” as the Center for the Investigation and Prevention of Aeronautical Accidents (Cenipa) and the Civil Police look into the accident’s circumstances and causes. The victims are being identified by the General Institute of Forensics.
In an X post, Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva expressed his sympathies to the victims’ families.
“The Air Force is investigating the causes of the accident and the federal government is at the disposal of the state government and local authorities to clarify the situation as soon as possible,” he stated.
