Coming out for public figures entails disclosing their gender identity or sexual orientation to millions of people worldwide.
Superstars like Rene Rapp and Chappell Roan, who have both been welcomed as part of the lesbian pop renaissance, used their quick ascent to fame this year as an opportunity to share more about who they are. Others claimed that this was their first time becoming a member of the LGBTQ community.
Some of the persons who came out in 2024 are listed below.
Sophia Bush
Sophia Bush acknowledged her identity as a gay woman and her relationship with soccer player Ashlyn Harris in an April cover story for Glamour magazine.
She stated for the magazine, “I’ve felt so safe, respected, and loved in the queer community, as an ally all my life, that I already felt it was my home as I came into myself.” As of right now, I believe queer is the greatest way to describe it. Actually, I can’t say it without grinning. And it feels so wonderful.
Amber Ruffin
On the final night of Pride Month, comedian Amber Ruffin shared a happy picture of herself sporting a shirt that read “queer.” Babies, take pride in who you are! Yes, I am! As part of the post, Ruffin stated that exactly zero people should be shocked by the revelation.
Julia Fox
In a July TikTok video, actress and author Julia Fox seemed to come out as a lesbian. Following a popular video in which comedian Emily Gracin made a joke about witnessing a lesbian with their boyfriend, Fox jokingly declared that I was that lesbian. Fox had a brief but well-publicized relationship with the rapper Ye, then known as Kanye West, in 2022. Fox had previously been married to a man. In the video, Fox apologized to the boys.
Maren Morris
During Pride Month, singer Maren Morris expressed her happiness at being the B in LGBTQ+ on Instagram. The country music artist has previously made no secret of her support for the LGBTQ community. She raised $100,000 for trans rights organizations in 2022 after Tucker Carlson, a Fox News host, called her a crazy country music artist for criticizing anti-transgender statements.

Maya Massafera
Maya Massafera, a Brazilian social media star with 5.5 million Instagram followers, came out as a trans woman in May. Her new name and a picture of what looks to be a court document proving that her government IDs now display her sex as female were posted in the post. In a moving piece that appeared in the Pride edition of Vogue Brazil in June, Massafera wrote: “They say that life starts at 40.” At 43, mine actually began.
Bruce Joel Rubin
Bruce Joel Rubin, a ghostwriter, demonstrated in June that it’s never too late to come out. In his biography, It’s Only a Movie, the 81-year-old Hollywood veteran said that he had been aware of his sexual orientation for many years. According to The Guardian, he also stated that his wife has been aware of his sexual orientation during their marriage and that he has come out to his kids and grandkids.
Ilana Glazer
Ilana Glazer, co-creator and star of Comedy Central’s Broad City, changed their pronouns to they/she on social media in the past year without disclosing any other personal information. Then, in a May interview with USA Today, they stated that pregnancy had made them more aware of how authentic being nonbinary feels to their physical selves.
Glazer went into further detail in an August interview with The Independent, stating that their femininity felt like drag and that they frequently felt compelled to conceal or joke about their manhood.
They said that discovering they are nonbinary has enabled them to navigate the world in a more authentic manner, saying, “Then this gift of being pregnant made space for me to be real with myself.”
Chlo Grace Moretz
Actress Chlo Grace Moretz came out as homosexual in a social media post supporting Vice President Kamala Harris prior to the presidential election, following years of public conjecture.
In November, she wrote, “I cast my early ballot and chose Kamala Harris.” This election has a lot on the line. As a woman, I feel that the government has no authority over my body and that only my doctor and I should make decisions regarding it. For us, Kamala Harris will guard that. I am a gay woman who thinks that the LGBTQ+ community needs legal safeguards.
Despite being connected to model Kate Harrison for over five years and frequently sharing pictures of the two of them, Moretz has never before discussed her own sexual orientation in public. She portrayed a gay teenager in the 2018 film The Miseducation of Cameron Post who was transported to a purported conversion treatment camp. During the press tour for that movie, she was surprised when a reporter for The Independent told her she had been included in an article about straight actors playing gay characters.
