A 77-year-old man from Indiana is facing multiple murder charges after he allegedly shot and killed three people inside a home, then calmly called 911 to report the violent act and waited for authorities to arrive.
The suspect, Patrick Waite, was arrested without incident outside a residence on South Scottsdale Drive, near Haubstadt in Gibson County. Deputies say he was standing in the driveway when they arrived, just as he had said he would be during the emergency call.
When deputies entered the home, they discovered a horrific scene: two women and a man were found dead. A fourth victim, also a man, was critically injured and transported to an area hospital. Authorities confirmed that four additional people, including a juvenile, were present in the home at the time of the shooting but were not harmed.
Suspect Called 911 After the Shooting
According to newly released court documents, Waite called 911 shortly after the shooting and admitted to the killings. During the call, he reportedly gave his location and told dispatchers he would be outside waiting for law enforcement officers.
When officers arrived on the scene, Waite was compliant and reportedly directed investigators to a Smith & Wesson handgun he had placed in the garage after the shootings. Deputies secured the weapon and took Waite into custody.
Gibson County Sheriff Bruce Vanoven confirmed the details during a media briefing, calling it one of the most devastating crime scenes the county has witnessed in years.
“This is a tragedy that has rocked our community,” Sheriff Vanoven said. “Our hearts are with the families of the victims as we continue to investigate what led to this senseless act of violence.”
Identities of the Victims and Autopsy Plans
Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims pending family notification. However, officials confirmed that autopsies for the deceased were scheduled for Monday, June 2. The suspect is expected to appear virtually in court on the same day to face preliminary charges.
The Indiana State Police are assisting the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office with the investigation. Law enforcement has not yet disclosed a motive, but they are currently interviewing witnesses and collecting evidence from the scene.
Suspect Held Without Bond
Patrick Waite is being held at the Gibson County Jail without bond. Prosecutors say he faces multiple counts of murder and potentially other felony charges, depending on the outcome of the ongoing investigation.
“This case is still developing, but what we know so far is deeply troubling,” said a spokesperson from the Gibson County Prosecutor’s Office. “We’re working closely with law enforcement to ensure a thorough and swift legal process.”
According to court documents obtained by local media outlets, Waite appeared calm during the 911 call and showed no signs of panic. Officials have not stated whether he has a prior criminal history.
Community in Shock
Residents of Haubstadt and surrounding areas expressed shock and sorrow over the incident. Neighbors described the area as quiet and peaceful — the kind of place where violent crime is rare.
“It’s heartbreaking,” said a neighbor who lives a few houses down. “You never expect something like this to happen in your own neighborhood.”
Local authorities have offered counseling services to affected residents and families. Community groups are also organizing a candlelight vigil in memory of the victims.
Ongoing Investigation
Law enforcement officials have cordoned off the scene as forensic teams continue to gather evidence. Authorities are also reviewing surveillance footage from the neighborhood and speaking with witnesses who were inside the home at the time of the incident.
Anyone with additional information about the shooting is urged to contact the Gibson County Sheriff’s Office or Indiana State Police.
