It’s a joke about snow. Ahead of Sunday’s game against the San Francisco 49ers, Buffalo Bills supporters are serious about clearing their team’s home field.
According to Andy Major, the vice president of operations for the Bills, hundreds of snow shovelers arrived to Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park, New York, to remove the two feet of snow that had covered the aisles and seats.
Major told NBC News on Sunday afternoon that they continued working through the night.
In anticipation of heavy snowfall before their home games this winter, the Bills issued a call for assistance on Sunday, asking supporters who are at least 18 years old to volunteer to shovel snow at Highmark Stadium.
As lake effect snow moves into the Buffalo area for Sunday night’s game, this request is made. Up to eight to twenty inches of snow could fall on Orchard Park before Tuesday morning, according to a lake effect snow warning that will last until Sunday at 7 p.m. ET.
Fans heading to Sunday night’s game are among those affected by the dangerous circumstances and post-Thanksgiving travel inconveniences caused by the snow, frost, and freezing winds that continue to batter parts of the northern United States.
Aisles and walkways will be clear for the game, but Major warned that because the stadium received almost 24 inches of snow over 16 hours, spectators should anticipate seeing snow in the seating sections.
Bills supporters can indicate their availability by completing a Google form if they would like to assist in getting the stadium ready for upcoming games. In addition to receiving meals and hot beverages during their shifts, shovelers will be paid $20 per hour. Although shovels are provided by the Bills and management firm ABM, shoveling enthusiasts are free to bring their own gear, the team stated.
Because snowfall is unpredictable, potential snow shovelers are probably only informed about their assignments a day in advance, the Bills said. The team suggests that shovelers bundle up with coats, boots, hats, gloves, scarves, and other weather-appropriate clothing.
When the western New York region has seen significant snowfall during football season, the Bills have called on their mafia to assist with shoveling the stadiums on multiple occasions.
