Ohio State, Michigan, North Carolina and NC State among schools fined after rash of football brawls

Following a furious postgame altercation that resembled other ugly, unsportsmanlike endings around college football over the weekend, the Atlantic Coast Conference imposed sanctions against North Carolina and rival NC State on Monday.

Following Saturday’s 35–30 victory over UNC Tar Heelson, Wolfpack players carried their school’s flag to the Kenan Stadium midfield logo in Chapel Hill.

Just a few steps from where departing North Carolina coach Mack Brown was mingling with NC State coaches and players, a fight broke out.

Additionally, the ACC said that Virginia Tech and Virginia will be penalized for a pregame altercation during Saturday’s rivalry game in Blacksburg, which the Hokies won.

The ACC stated that the penalty would be the “maximum allowed by the league’s bylaws,” although it did not reveal the punishments against all four schools.

Two of the four colleges refused to reply when NBC News asked them what the fine was, instead directing inquiries to conference officials.

According to Charlotte-based NBC station WCNC, the fine was $25,000.Additionally, a 2020–21ACC handbook said that the maximum penalty for a breach of the sportsmanlike principle was $25,000.
