The safety of the Houston Texans The NFL said on Tuesday that Azeez Al-Shaair has been suspended for three games without pay for repeatedly breaking rules meant to safeguard players’ health and safety.
After striking a helpless Trevor Lawrence during Sunday’s Texans’ 23–20 victory against the Jacksonville Jaguars, Al-Shaair was sent off. Al-Shaair dove and struck the Jaguars quarterback in the head with his forearm as he was slipping. Following the incident and leaving the game with a concussion, Lawrence displayed the fencing posture.
Earlier in the season, Al-Shaair was also fined twice for punching someone and for a late hit.
NFL Vice President of Football Operations Jon Runyan wrote to Al-Shaair, “Your lack of sportsmanship and respect for the game of football and all those who play, coach, and enjoy watching it is troubling and does not reflect the core values of the NFL.” We will not put up with your persistent disrespect for NFL playing rules, which endangers the health and safety of both you and your opponents.
Al-Shaair’s strike on Lawrence is likewise characterized in Runyan’s letter as improper and a major breach of the rules of the game.

Al-Shaair expressed regret over Monday’s hit.
To Trevor Al-Shaair wrote on X, “I truly apologize to you for what ended up happening.” We chatted before the game, and I wished you luck and said it was wonderful to see you back on the field. Any player getting wounded as a result of a hit I delivered, especially if it was deemed late or needless, is something I would never want to witness.
Al-Shaair would not be able to play until Houston’s Week 18 matchup with the Tennessee Titans due to the three-game suspension. However, ESPN claims that Al-Shaair is contesting the penalty.
Jacksonville coach Doug Pederson stated on Monday that once Lawrence passes the league’s concussion protocol, the team will assess whether he will return to action this season.
Lawrence wrote to Xon Sunday to express gratitude to everyone who has contacted me and been praying for me. I feel better now that I’m at home. Thank you all; it means a lot.
