Quarterback for the Cleveland BrownsSince taking over the starting position on October 27, Jameis Winston has been a highlight machine, both positively and negatively.
Winston hasn’t always been successful, but he has always been entertaining, as seen by his impassioned pregame speeches, high interception totals, and leading numerous touchdown drives in the middle of a snowstorm during a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
When Winston threw for 497 yards and four touchdowns in a 41-32 loss to the Denver Broncos on Monday night, that was never more accurate. If Winston hadn’t also thrown three interceptions, including two pick-sixes, his stat line would have been fantastic.
The Browns had two backbreaking interceptions that were returned for touchdowns.
After the two-minute warning, Cleveland drove for a possible game-winning score late in the second quarter. Nik Bonitto picked Winston, who had guided the Browns to the brink of the red zone, on the seventh play of the drive. Bonitto returned the ball 71 yards, giving the Broncos a 21-10 lead.
In typical Winston fashion, he led an 11-play drive for a touchdown in less than 90 seconds after Bonitto’s score.
In the fourth, Winston could have been the hero. Cleveland could have won the game with a field goal or touchdown after taking possession with less than three minutes remaining and trailing 34–32.
However, Denver took a 41-32 lead after Ja’Quan McMillan intercepted Winston for a 44-yard touchdown one play after converting a 3rd-and-12.
With fewer than two minutes remaining, that gave the Broncos a late two-score lead. Seven plays later, Winston was intercepted once more for good measure.
In actuality, the game was a miniature representation of Winston’s career.
He has passed for 152 touchdowns but 106 interceptions in 103 games. Winston last participated in more than ten games in a season in 2019, throwing for an incredible 5,109 yards, 33 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions.
Winston’s setting of a record on Monday night is therefore appropriate. He has the most passing yards in NFL history (668 total), counting the yards he returned and the yards he threw to his teammates.
After the game, Winston remarked, “I know I’m better than this.” All I’m asking for is for the Lord to save me from pick-sixes.
