The new exhibit, Know Your State and Make it Know: The South Carolina Historical Marker Program, will open soon, according to the South Carolina Department of Archives and History (SCDAH). It will open at the South Carolina History Center, located at 8301 Parklane Road, Columbia, SC 29223, on Thursday, December 5, 2024, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
The South Carolina Department of Archives and History has been working with local organizations to install state historical markers to highlight significant locations in their towns for almost 90 years. The history of that program is told in this exhibit, which also highlights the efforts of our agency and the thousands of South Carolinians who have followed the program’s first director, Dr. Nora Marshall Davis, who urged them to learn about their state and share it with others through the South Carolina Historical Marker Program. stated Edwin Breeden, Ph.D., the exhibit’s creator.
Established in 1936, South Carolina’s official state historical marker program is one of the oldest in the nation and is maintained by the South Carolina State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO). The South Carolina Department of Archives and History (SCDAH) has authorized and authorized the installation of historical markers throughout the state since the program’s inception.
The South Carolina Historical Marker Program has always been locally driven yet state-managed. Although SCDAH has never received consistent state funding for new markers, it does evaluate and approve all new state historical markers. Instead, it is up to the people of South Carolina to suggest, record, finance, and preserve state historical markers.
Through March 2025, the show will be accessible to the public Monday through Friday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. Viewing the show is free of charge.
