Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming announced on Wednesday that he will compete for the seat occupied by two-term Senator Bill Cassidy, R-La., citing Cassidy’s vote to convict Donald Trump following his 2021 impeachment trial. This means that Cassidy will face at least one primary rival in 2026.
In a statement, former Congressman Fleming claimed that Cassidy had let the people of Louisiana down.
In the latter year of his first administration, several Republicans abandoned President Trump, according to a statement from Fleming. However, those who abandoned him and America First were not dedicated to his efforts to elevate America. The people of Louisiana persisted in this battle.
Cassidy told the Shreveport Times last month that he is “obviously working hard toward 2026,” but he has not yet made a formal announcement that he is seeking reelection.
Along with Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine, who is also running for reelection in 2026, Cassidy was one of three Senate Republicans who voted to convict Trump following the riot at the U.S. Capitol on January 6, 2021, and who are still in office. The Senate cleared him after the House voted to impeach him.
Cassidy is seeking reelection in ruby-red Louisiana, which supported Trump by 22 points, while Collins represents a state that Vice President Kamala Harris won in the elections last month.
Flaunting his role as a key counselor to Trump during the president-elect’s first government, Fleming overlapped with Cassidy during their time in the House.
“The opportunity to stand with President Trump for the values of America First is why I seek to serve the people of Louisiana in the United States Senate,” Fleming said. “I cannot fully express the deep sense of pride I have, having served President Trump in the West Wing of the White House as he was literally fighting for his political life against those who were attacking him and turning their backs on him.”
Fleming was initially chosen to serve as Louisiana 2023’s treasurer.
