Bad Bunny, a reggaeton musician, cemented his position as the most-streamed Latin artist globally on Spotify this year. However, Mexican music, which is making a big resurgence as it enters the mainstream music scene, also had a significant year in 2024.
With 26 states where it is the most popular Latin music, Mexican music, or music mexicana, is currently the most streamed genre in the United States. Additionally, it ranks as the third most popular Latin music genre on Spotify worldwide.
Mexican musician Peso Pluma, the second most-streamed Latin artist on Spotify behind Bad Bunny, is a major contributor to the popularization of Mexican music. The young musician became famous thanks to his unique “corridos tumbados” that blended with trap, reggaeton, and other regional Mexican music styles.
Feid and Karol G, both Colombian reggaeton singers, are in third and fourth place, respectively, behind Peso Pluma. This is the fifth year in a row that Karol G has been the most-listened-to female Latin artist on Spotify. Her album “Ma ana Ser Bonito” was also the fourth most listened to album worldwide and the top-streamed Latin album.
On Spotify, the three Latin male vocalists rank in the top 10 most-streamed artists worldwide. Feid is number ten, Peso Pluma is number seven, and Bad Bunny is number three. They stand beside such heavyweights as Ariana Grande, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift, among others.
Over the past ten years, there has been a steady increase in consumer demand for Latin music, primarily due to the rising mainstream success of Latin urban genres like reggaeton.
The Latin music business had previously placed a long-term wager on Mexican music and pop and rock en espa ol to make Spanish-language songs more widely known.
However, it appears like the tide is turning once more: Peso Pluma, Junior H, Natanael Cano, and the American regional Mexican band Fuerza Regida are four of the top ten Latin musicians on Spotify that specialize in Mexican music. Reggaeton music is produced by the six surviving artists: Bad Bunny, Feid, Karo G, Rauw Alejandro, Myke Towers, and Anuel AA.
This year’s top Latin song on Spotify was the reggaeton smash “Gata Only,” which was performed by Chilean artists Floyy Menor and Cris Mj. Additionally, the song was the fourth most streamed song worldwide.
As it grew throughout Latin America, Spotify’s global Latin music user base grew by 986% between 2014 and 2023.
The Recording Industry Association of America reports that Latin music income in the United States increased by 7% this year to a record high of $685 million, continuing to surpass the recorded music industry’ already robust expansion.
