(WNY News Now) CBP officials at the Buffalo border crossing capture a U.S. citizen who was wanted by the U.S. Army for desertion sixteen years ago.
NIAGARA FALLS, N.Y. — A U.S. citizen was detained by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officials at the Port of Buffalo’s Rainbow Bridge border crossing for military desertion.
A 38-year-old American citizen was caught by CBP officials on the pedestrian walkway on December 3. According to the tourist, he was surrendering for military desertion. For confirmation, the tourist was escorted to secondary inspection.
Officers confirmed the man’s identify during the secondary inspection and found that he was in possession of an active U.S. Army warrant for military desertion from the National Crime Information Center.
“Every traveler entering the United States is screened by our officers with great diligence,” stated Area Port Director Gaetano Cordone. To assist in apprehending fugitives and making sure they are held responsible for their activities, we collaborate closely with a number of law enforcement organizations.
After being detained and processed by CBP authorities, the military deserter was handed over to U.S. Army staff from the Provost Marshal’s Office in Fort Liberty, North Carolina.
