Vance to tour Helene recovery efforts in North Carolina

According to a person familiar with the trip, Vice President-elect JD Vance is scheduled to visit Fairview, North Carolina, on Friday to assess Hurricane Helene recovery work, as reported by NBC News.

This person said that Vance is expected to visit a house remodeling project and meet with first responders. Additionally, he will meet with the family of Tony Ray Garrison, a fire battalion chief who lost his life in late September while attempting to rescue people from a mudslide caused by Helene.

The travel to North Carolina will be Vance’s first since the election last month, except from meetings and activities related to President-elect Donald Trump’s transition efforts.

While touring storm-ravaged Damascus, Virginia, in October, Vance assessed the devastation caused by Helene. When Vance spoke that day alongside fellow Republican Governor Glenn Youngkin, he discussed the significance of government support for recovery efforts in North Carolina and elsewhere. Additionally, Vance promised to do everything in our power to support the reconstruction of this community and communities around Appalachia.

While answering questions, Vance was flanked by Youngkin and local authorities. He praised FEMA for its abundance of resources, but he also said that President Joe Biden’s administration should do a far better job of giving people a sense of importance.

This community has been neglected for a long time, and they believe their government is ignoring them once more, Vance added. That needs to be changed.

After assuming office in January 2023, Vance gained a reputation for being quick to respond to local emergencies, including the hazardous train crash in East Palestine and a series of tornadoes in western Ohio this year. He will shortly step down from his position as U.S. Senator from Ohio.
