Taylor Swift’s ‘Eras Tour Book’ sells more than 800,000 copies in first weekend

An author who is better renowned for her singing than for words on paper has the largest book launch of the year thus far.

Swift’s Eras Tour Book sold 814,000 copies over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, according to Circana. Around 85% of the print market is tracked by Circana, but the Eras data are more accurate because Swift sold the book only through Target, which started the Eras tie-in on Black Friday.

According to a Targetpress release, just “nearly 1 million copies” were sold in the first week of the book’s release, although the retailer did not specify how many copies were sold.

The book, which costs $39.99 in stores and online, has over 500 images from her global tour, which became the highest-grossing tour ever.

In an October Instagram post announcing the book’s release, Swift said it would include her own thoughts on the nearly two-year tour, never-before-seen behind-the-scenes pictures, and all the wonderful experiences that fans brought to the performances.

Some local bookshop owners are disgruntled because the book was published independently and sold just through Target, claiming that they might have made money from such a significant release. Swift also independently released the three-hour Eras Tour concert movie in theaters. Disney+ is the only place to stream the film right now.

After seeing several typos, grammatical errors, poor graphic design, and grainy or low-quality images, some Swifties even criticized the book release, calling it The Errors Tour Book.

One admirer asked if the book was altered prior to publication in a TikTok post. “If you’re paying forty dollars for a book, wouldn’t you expect it to have this many errors?” she questioned, holding her Eras Tour Book.

Requests for comment were not answered by Swift’s team or Target.

Despite this, sales of the Black Friday in-store release were extremely high. Swift’s deluxe album, The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology, was released on CD and vinyl at the same time as the book.

According to a press release from Rick Gomez, executive vice president and chief commercial officer at Target, “We knew the release of Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour Book and The Tortured Poets Department: The Anthology would be a huge, huge moment for Target shoppers and Taylor Swift fans everywhere, but seeing the record-breaking response unfold over the last week has been an absolute thrill.”

According to the press release, the book is also the best-selling book in the Music category since Circana started keeping count 20 years ago. Requests for comment from Circana were not answered.
