(WNY News Now) Due to extreme winter weather, blood drives are cancelled and donor turnout is limited, resulting in a significant shortage at Erie’s Community Blood Bank.
Erie, PennsylvaniaOver the past week, the Community Blood Bank has had to cancel 13 blood drives due to the persistently bad winter weather. Our local blood supply is under stress as a result of this. When possible, we have been organizing emergency blood drives, but the number of donors has been incredibly low.
There is a severe shortage of blood available for patients in need as a result of winter storms that have disrupted transportation widely and forced many blood donation appointments to be canceled. We are aware that there hasn’t been much travel within the City of Erie lately, and CBB places a high premium on our donors’ safety. Donors are welcome at the Community Blood Bank, which is open during regular business hours at the Erie Donor Center. We do, however, suggest that everyone exercise caution and only travel if they are able to.
The only source of blood and blood products in the area is the Community Blood Bank. The Community Blood Bank is striving to keep a safe supply of blood available as our hospitals continue to require it. All blood types are required, but type O blood is particularly important since it can be used to satisfy patients’ urgent demands.
