What we know about the person of interest in the UHC shooting

Six law enforcement authorities with knowledge of the case have identified Luigi Mangione as the individual being questioned in Pennsylvania in relation to the shooting death of United Healthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

According to officials on Monday, Mangione, 26, was taken into custody by Altoona, Pennsylvania, police, but he has not been prosecuted.

According to a senior law enforcement official, investigators are investigating if Mangione recently took a bus from Philadelphia, which is about 240 miles distant, to Altoona.

Two top law enforcement authorities claim that Mangione was discovered in a McDonald’s restaurant with many forged identification documents, including one under the name Marc Rosario. Officials said at a news conference that an employee recognized him and notified the local police.

Last week, police reported that the alleged shooter had taken a bus to New York City in late November and had stayed at a hostel in Manhattan.

Three people with knowledge of the investigation said that the individual who checked into the hostel also used a phony New Jersey ID using the same name, Marc Rosario.

On the morning of December 4, Thompson, 50, was shot and killed in front of the New York Hilton Midtown while he was en route to give a speech at an investment conference.

In what New York Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch called a deliberate, preplanned targeted crime, police said the gunman seemed to wait for his chosen victim.

Thompson was shot at least once in the back and once in the right calf by the masked shooter who came up behind him. The phrases “deny,” “delay,” and “depose” were inscribed on shell casings discovered at the location.
