(WNY News Now) As the National Weather Service issues a Lake Effect Snow Warning, predicting up to three feet of snow and dangerous travel conditions, residents of Western New York prepare for a significant winter storm.
A Lake Effect Snow Warning has been issued by Buffalo’s National Weather Service (NWS) for Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and southern Erie Counties. It will be in effect from 4:00 PM on Wednesday, December 10, until 1:00 PM on Friday, December 13. With localized accumulations reaching from two to three feet in the most persistent bands, this alert predicts severe lake effect snow.
Significant blowing and drifting snow is anticipated due to wind gusts of up to 40 mph, which are also included in the warning. Travel will be extremely dangerous on Wednesday evening, Thursday morning, and Thursday evening commutes due to the substantial visibility impairment caused by these circumstances.
Impact Zones:
- Central and southern Erie County
- Western Wyoming County
- Western Chautauqua County
- Far northwest Cattaraugus County
Within a few miles, the weather can change from heavy snow to dry conditions, thus residents are advised to be ready for swiftly changing road conditions and visibility.
NWS Instructions:
- Travel Caution: Drivers should expect deep snow cover on roads and significantly reduced visibility.
- Stay Informed: Snow reports can be submitted through the NWS website or social media channels to assist in tracking storm severity.
- Be Prepared: Keep emergency supplies in your vehicle, and avoid unnecessary travel during the heaviest snowfall.
It is recommended that residents keep an eye on local forecasts and pay close attention to NWS updates.
