(WNY News Now) – A fierce fire broke out on the second floor of a Jamestown residential building Thursday evening, resulting in one resident hospitalized for smoke inhalation and two kittens lost to the blaze.

Jamestown, N.Y. – On October 24, 2024, a significant fire erupted at a residential building on 539 Crescent Street in Jamestown. The Jamestown Fire Department (JFD) responded to the alarm at 4:37 p.m., with multiple units from Engine 3, Engine 4, and Ladder 1 on site, along with Chief officers. The Jamestown Police Department (JPD), ALSTAR EMS, Chautauqua County paramedics, and National Fuel provided assistance in the operation.

Arriving at the scene, JFD’s Car 1 found heavy smoke and flames emerging from a second-story window in the structure’s A/D corner. Officers from JPD reported that all occupants had safely evacuated, which was later confirmed by the residents.

Engine 3 initiated an aggressive attack, deploying two 1-3/4-inch hoses to the second floor to combat the flames. Meanwhile, Engine 4 secured a water source at Crescent and Kipp streets, directing supply lines to Engine 3. Crews managed to subdue the majority of the fire on the second floor within 15 minutes of their arrival.

Ladder 1 conducted thorough searches on both floors to ensure no individuals were trapped inside. However, challenges arose when crews were unable to access the attic directly, necessitating multiple entry points to prevent the fire’s spread. As flames advanced between the original roof and a tin overlay, crews temporarily evacuated to execute an exterior attack. Once the fire in the roof was controlled, firefighters resumed interior operations to ensure the area was fully overhauled. The Fire Department concluded their response at 8:00 p.m., while fire investigators from the JFD remained on-scene with JPD.

A total of 15 off-shift firefighters were called in to support the operation. Despite their rapid response and coordinated efforts, two kittens perished in the incident, and one resident was transported to UPMC Chautauqua for smoke inhalation treatment. Fortunately, no other injuries were reported.

The fire’s cause remains under investigation, with Jamestown fire and police investigators working together to determine its origin. In addition to immediate on-scene support, the American Red Cross is providing assistance to the affected residents.
