Ariana DeBose wants ‘Kraven the Hunter’ viewers to rethink what they know of the supervillain

He is regarded as one of the most deadly predators in the planet. However, Ariana DeBose, the Oscar-winning actress who plays Kraven’s close buddy Calypso in Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man universe film Kraven the Hunter, challenges your preconceived notions about this villain.

Regardless of your opinion of him, I don’t always refer to him as a villain. She discussed Kraven (played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson) in a video interview with NBC News, saying, “I don’t necessarily use the word hero to describe him.”

According to DeBose, the film depicts complex characters that are in between good and evil, with nuances that cut both ways.

Director J.C. Chandor’s Kraven the Hunter, which opens nationally on Friday, portrays a Kraven who is a conservationist and superhuman murderer but also fiercely defends his family.

According to DeBose, the main focus of this movie is intentions and comprehending the reasons behind the actions of these characters.

According to her, this gives the movie a degree of realism that some of the earlier Sony Marvel productions did not have.

In addition to eliminating poachers who raided a nature preserve and dealing a vicious blow to a kingpin in a maximum-security jail, viewers will witness Kraven designating additional enemy targets as prey. While his mobster father (Russell Crowe) is having problems, he also checks in on his brother (Fred Hechinger).

The first Spider-Man film from Sony to receive a R rating is Kraven the Hunter. According to DeBose, this allows the movie and its audience to delve further into the motivations and history of people who have been portrayed as antagonists.

The picture was, in my opinion, somewhat emancipated by its R rating. In actuality, Kraven is portrayed as a cruel character, even in the comics, she claimed. Therefore, in my opinion, it does enable the viewer to truly embark on the adventure and ask themselves, “Who is really doing what?” And who is acting with good intentions? And is anyone doing this for their own benefit?

DeBose responded that she lets the audience figure out her character’s motivations when asked.

According to her, I wanted to portray a woman going through a life transformation and accompany her on her path. If it makes sense, I find it entertaining to believe the origin narrative of anything. Thus, you’re getting to know Calypso as you’re coming to know Kraven.

When DeBose won the Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2022 for her performance as Anita in Steven Spielberg’s adaptation of West Side Story, she became the first Afro Latina and the first openly gay woman of color to win an Academy Award. Prior to that, she was a member of the original cast of Hamilton, the Tony Award-winning musical directed by Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Additionally, DeBose and Oscar-winning actor Ke Huy Quan will collaborate on the action comedy Love Hurts the next year.

DeBose mentioned a figure outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (also known as the MCU) when asked about other characters that influenced her to play Calypso.

Disney’s portrayal of Maleficent was fantastic, according to DeBose, who praised the company’s ability to take a traditionally bad figure and give them an origin narrative that explains their past and how they came to be in that position. “I think my attraction to Kraven stemmed from my appreciation of stories like that.

Even if viewers have only ever seen Kraven and her character Calypso once, DeBose wants them to wonder about their pasts and motivations.

“I believe that in order to prevent audiences from learning that there is only one correct or good interpretation, you need to provide them with a wide range of entertainment options. She responded that was not the purpose of art.
