Lake Effect Snow Warning: Northern Chautauqua County Faces Travel Hazards and Service Closures

Mayville, New York (WNY News Now) As dangerous winter weather persists, the Chautauqua County Government advises citizens in northern Chautauqua County and regions severely affected by lake effect snow, such as Ripley, Westfield, Portland, Dunkirk/Fredonia, Sheridan, and Silver Creek, to refrain from needless travel.

With total snow accumulations of two to three feet predicted in the most persistent bands and wind gusts of up to 40 mph generating blowing and drifting snow, the area is under a Lake Effect Snow Warning, according to the National Weather Service.

Travel is becoming exceedingly hazardous due to these conditions, which are causing poor visibility, whiteouts, and snow-covered roads. Locals are urged to keep an eye on weather updates and to avoid the roads if feasible. If you have to travel, make sure your car is emergency-ready and be ready for quickly shifting situations.

Due to the bad weather, the Dunkirk DMV office, which is situated at 3998 Vineyard Drive, Dunkirk, NY 14048, is also closed today. If the weather permits, the office will reopen tomorrow during regular business hours.

Residents who require DMV services are urged to use the online services at dmv.ny.gov or to visit one of the other sites indicated below.
