Columbia, S.C.James Robert Peterson, 37, of Prosperity, was found guilty on one count of felony in possession of a firearm by a federal grand jury in Columbia.
According to the indictment, Peterson was discovered in possession of a pistol on June 11 after an incident in which he reportedly shot and killed K9 Agent Coba of the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) as police attempted to apprehend him. Numerous additional charges pertaining to the incident have been brought against Peterson in state court. Peterson is prohibited from owning a handgun due to a prior criminal conviction.
Peterson is being held pending trial and faces a maximum sentence of 15 years in federal prison.
Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that unites law enforcement at all levels with the communities they serve, is involved in this case. Its goal is to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone by reducing violent crime and gun violence. Based on these fundamental ideas, the department launched a violent crime reduction strategy strengthening PSN on May 26, 2021: building community legitimacy and trust, assisting community-based organizations that help prevent violence in the first place, establishing strategic and targeted enforcement priorities, and tracking the outcomes.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives all looked into the matter. Elle E. Klein, an assistant U.S. attorney, is prosecuting the case.
All of the indictment’s charges are only accusations, according to U.S. Attorney Adair F. Boroughs, who also said the defendants are assumed innocent until and until proven guilty.
