Spies foiled assassination plots during historic Iraq visit, Pope Francis says

In his new book, Pope Francis has said that British agents and police inside the country stopped two murder attempts against him during a historic visit to northern Iraq.

Francis claimed authorities informed him that two known suicide bombers were preparing to target one of his events in the damaged city of Mosul after he landed in the nation’s capital, Baghdad, in March 2021.

He wrote “Spera,” which means “Hope,” as soon as we touched down, and excerpts of it are being featured in the Italian newspaper Corriere della Sera.

The Vatican Gendarmerie was notified by the police of a British intelligence warning that a young suicide bomber, a lady armed with explosives, was en route to Mosul to detonate herself during the papal visit. He added that a van had also driven off with the same intention.

He was briefed about the plots and then requested security personnel for an update on the potential killers. “They are no longer there,” Francis wrote in response to the commander’s lame response. They were intercepted and detonated by the Iraqi police.

I found that to be really stunning as well. He went on to say that this was also the poisoned fruit of war.

The Iraqi police did not immediately reply to a request for comment, and a representative of the British government told NBC News that they would not comment on intelligence-related issues.
