Niagara County Joins Statewide Effort to Curb Impaired Driving This Halloween

(WNY News Now) – This Halloween, Niagara County law enforcement will join New York State’s High Visibility Engagement Campaign to combat impaired driving and save lives.

In an initiative aimed at reducing impaired driving incidents, Niagara County Sheriff Michael J. Filicetti announced that local law enforcement will be participating in New York State’s STOP-DWI High Visibility Engagement Campaign this Halloween. Law enforcement agencies across Niagara County will intensify their presence on the roads, joining a statewide effort beginning on Thursday, October 31, and extending through Sunday, November 3, 2024. This collaborative campaign is designed to prevent impaired driving-related injuries and fatalities.

Sheriff Filicetti emphasized the importance of the initiative, noting that while past STOP-DWI efforts have successfully reduced impaired-driving fatalities across New York, impaired driving remains a significant public safety threat. Officers in Niagara County will be especially focused on preventing accidents involving alcohol and other substances.

This Halloween engagement is part of a series of targeted campaigns throughout the year promoted by STOP-DWI New York and the Governor’s Traffic Safety Committee. These campaigns also cover high-risk occasions such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Super Bowl, St. Patrick’s Day, and the July 4th holiday weekend, each aimed at curbing impaired driving through increased law enforcement visibility and public awareness efforts.

The message for residents and visitors is clear: enjoy Halloween responsibly by avoiding impaired driving. Law enforcement will be out in full force to ensure that everyone can celebrate safely and prevent tragedies on the road. The STOP-DWI campaign urges individuals to make responsible choices, designate sober drivers, and support efforts to reduce impaired-driving incidents in Niagara County and across New York.
