The Food and Drug Administration announced a voluntary recall of Systane brand eye drops due to potential fungus contamination.
In response to a customer complaint “of foreign material observed inside a sealed single-use vial,” the FDA announced the recall of one lot of Systane Lubricant Eye Drops Ultra PF. The substance was found to be “fungal in nature.”
Eye infections that “may be vision-threatening, and in very rare cases potentially life-threatening in immunocompromised patients,” could result from the contamination, the announcement said.
According to the FDA, Alcon Laboratories, the company that makes the eye drops, has not heard of any negative side effects from consumers.
The 25-count on-the-go single vials containing the recalled eye drops have lot number 10101 and an expiration date of September 2025. Anotice from the supermarket company claims that the product was available at Publix.
Those with dry eye problems can use the drops to relieve burning and irritation.
The FDA advised anyone who has bought the eye drops to cease using them right away and to request a replacement or refund. Anyone who is exhibiting symptoms ought to speak with their doctor.
Alcon representative Steven Smith stated that although the business is still investigating, “the presence of foreign material appears to be isolated to the single unit returned by a customer.”
“Out of an abundance of caution to prioritize consumer safety,” he continued, Alcon announced the product’s recall.
