Winter Storm Watch: Heavy Lake-Effect Snow Expected in Western New York

(WNY News Now) Beginning Wednesday morning, a Winter Storm Watch has been issued for portions of Western New York, warning of dangerous travel conditions and snowfall topping seven inches.

A Winter Storm Watch has been issued by the Buffalo, New York-based National Weather Service (NWS) and will be in force from December 30 at 3:46 AM EST to January 5 at 6:00 PM EST. Heavy lake-effect snow is possible in Wyoming, Chautauqua, Cattaraugus, and Southern Erie counties, according to the notice.

Because total accumulations are predicted to surpass 7 inches, residents in these locations should brace themselves for heavy snowfall. Narrow bands of the hardest snow are predicted, resulting in rapidly shifting driving conditions and decreased visibility. Travel may become hazardous due to these circumstances, particularly on Wednesday mornings and evenings.

The NWS stresses that anyone traveling during this time should exercise caution as isolated travel issues are likely to occur. For the most recent updates on weather developments, follow NY Alert and NWS Buffalo.
