Yolanda Saldívar, woman convicted of killing Selena Quintanilla, files for parole

The woman found guilty of Selena Quintanilla Prez’s murder, Yolanda Sald Var, has applied for release.

According to the Texas Department of Criminal Justice’s web records, Sald Var, 63, submitted a parole petition in Texas thirty years after the Mexican American singer’s passing. She is incarcerated at the Patrick L. O. Daniel Unit prison in Gatesville, Texas, and is presently undergoing a parole review procedure.

Sald Var managed two of the singer’s apparel businesses and served as president of her fan club. On March 31, 1995, she shot and killed Quintanilla P. Rez at a Days Inn motel in Corpus Christi, Texas. The singer of Como La Flor was 23 years old.

On October 26, 1995, Sald Var was found guilty of first-degree murder and given a life sentence with the chance of release after 30 years.

Sald Var was sacked by Quintanilla P. Rez’s family in early 1995 on charges of embezzling funds from the singer’s fan club and boutiques, according to NBC News. According to a 1998 court record from the Texas Court of Appeals, the singer’s widower, Chris P. Rez, stated in court that they didn’t trust her and had her removed from their checking accounts.

Sald Var has previously claimed that she did not kill the singer on purpose, notably in Selena & Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them, the Oxygen documentary series that aired last year.

She denied allegations of embezzlement and claimed to be hiding Quintanilla Prez’s extramarital affair in the three-part documentary series. She did not, however, offer any proof.

Fans of the singer expressed their disapproval of the documentary, saying they didn’t want to hear what Sald Var had to say.

According to the website of the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, the parole procedure starts around four months before to the eligibility date and six months prior to the parole eligibility date for a first review. Sald Var’s file, including protest and support letters, will be examined, and a case summary will be written for the board voting panel.

The date of Sald Var’s parole review is March 30.
