ColumbiaOn January 1, 2025, the South Carolina Department of Agriculture will start taking applications for Hemp Farming Permits for the 2025 growing season. Applications for hemp farming in South Carolina in 2025 must be submitted online between January 1 and February 28, 2025.

You need to submit a Farm Service Agency (FSA) number and finish a background check via IdentoGO in order to be eligible for a hemp farming permit. The only people who can apply are residents of South Carolina.

All candidates must submit their applications online at agriculture.sc.gov/hemp; there is no paper or printable version available. Current permit holders who want to keep growing must reapply because permits expire annually.

Fees: There is a $100 application cost for hemp farming permits. Following approval of the application and signing of the Participation Agreement, a $500 permit fee is required.

Late Application Period: To accommodate late applicants, there will be a one-week extension for Hemp Farming Permit applications in 2025. The deadline for late applications is March 1–March 8. A non-refundable $100 permit application fee and a $500 late fee that must be paid at the time of application may be included in an application during this late application period. The $500 Hemp Farming Permit cost must be paid by the applicant before a permit may be provided, even if the application is accepted. Important: On March 8, the late application period will conclude at 5:00 p.m. There will be no exceptions to the rule that no applications will be accepted once the late application period has ended.

Additional Requirements for Verification of Lease Agreements: Lease agreements must be filed at the county Register of Deeds Office in the same way as a real estate deed. Notarization is required for all lease agreement signatures. The supporting documentation for your application must include a notarized and appropriately recorded lease agreement.
