When asked by NBC News about overseeing the certification of the 2024 election, Vice President Kamala Harris made a straightforward statement as she entered the Senate floor on Monday: Democracy wins out.
A few minutes later, Harris prevailed, guiding Congress’s unanimous support for Donald Trump’s reelection and the electoral vote she lost.
Harris clasped her hands in front of her and looked straight ahead as the four senators alternately read aloud the state-by-state electoral totals.
Both when the vote total hit the threshold to declare Trump the next president and when her party gave her a standing ovation upon hearing her vote number, she smiled broadly.
Harris and President Joe Biden, her predecessor on the campaign trail, also repeated this message to voters on January 6. They opposed the violent riot by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, which resulted in an unprecedented attack on the nation’s Capitol, and instead promoted freedom and democracy.
Gallows and a noose erected outside the Capitol grounds were absent on this day in contrast to four years prior. Or chants calling for the vice president to be hanged for not rejecting the people’s will and the election’s actual result. Rather, the ceremony proceeded as planned, pro forma, and took all but thirty minutes.
Harris was ultimately defeated by the American electorate, who therefore welcomed Trump and his promises to overthrow the current system. Trump won the popular vote, surged through battleground states, including the so-called “blue wall” of states that Democrats usually need to win, and earned 312 electoral votes to Harris’ 226.
A day after the election, Harris acknowledged her defeat and made an effort to reassure her supporters, in contrast to Trump’s refusal to accept the results of 2020.
“The light of America’s promise will always burn bright,” Harris added, despite the fact that the election’s conclusion was not what we desired, what we fought for, or what we voted for.
