‘The Piano Lesson,’ GloRilla and Ayo Edebiri lead NAACP Image Award nominations

Which celebrity had the biggest year for Black viewers may be determined by the NAACP Image Award for Entertainer of the Year.

Was it the artist Kendrick Lamar, who for weeks made headlines with his feud with Drake? Or Keke Palmer, the ubiquitous game show host, actress, and podcaster? Was it Shannon Sharpe, whose podcast Club Shay Shay frequently ignites social media with smoldering rumors, or the hilarious comic Kevin Hart? Fans of Wicked may have held space for Cynthia Erivo to defy gravity.

The NAACP Image Awards ceremony, which will be televised on BET and CBS on February 22, will reveal the winner.

Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist leads the television categories with nine nominations, while The Piano Lesson, starring John David Washington in an adaption of one of August Wilson’s beloved plays, tops the film categories with fourteen.

With four nods for her work on the FX show, a Saturday Night Live guest appearance, and her voice performance in Inside Out 2, Ayo Edebiri of The Bear leads the field for TV and movie categories. Palmer comes in right behind her with four nominations.

With six nominations, rapper GloRilla is the most nominated musical artist, followed by Usher, Kendrick Lamar, and Doechii, each with four.

Derrick Johnson, president and CEO of the NAACP, stated, “We are excited to celebrate the genius of Black talent and creativity whose stories shape culture, ignite change, and inspire generations.” Their voices create a rich tapestry that celebrates our identity, acknowledges our legacy, and demonstrates the potency of narrative in promoting real development through literature, music, film, and other mediums.
