Hunter Biden special counsel dings President Joe Biden over pardon

Washington The special counsel who accused Hunter Biden of tax and firearm offenses prior to his father, President Joe Biden, pardoning him, submitted his final report to the Justice Department on Monday.

In the report, special counsel David Weiss stated that the president could not “rewrite history,” implying that Biden had defamed “the public servants at the Department of Justice based solely on false accusations” by criticizing the case against his last surviving son when he announced his pardon decision.

In the official White House statement announcing the pardon, Bid called the conviction of his sons as a miscarriage of justice. Prosecutors for Weiss later contested this claim in a court filing.

“Politicians who attack the decisions of career prosecutors as politically motivated when they disagree with the outcome of a case undermine the public s confidence in our criminal justice system,” Weiss stated. “The President s statements unfairly impugn the integrity not only of Department of Justice personnel, but all of the public servants making these difficult decisions in good faith.”

Hunter Biden was scheduled to be sentenced in connection with his conviction for violating a statute that federal prosecutors rarely utilize, which makes it illegal for drug users to possess weapons, shortly before Biden pardoned his son early last month. Throughout the 2024 campaign, Biden made it clear that he would not pardon his son, even after withdrawing from the race in the summer.

Hunter Biden’s lawyer, Abbe Lowell, told NBC News that Weiss’ report “conveniently omits his proposal to resolve this investigation in 2023 with a pair of misdemeanors and a diverted gun charge recommended by career prosecutors.”

Weiss had not provided an explanation, according to Lowell, for why prosecutors “pursued wild and debunked conspiracies” that prolonged the enquiry.

“What is clear from this report is that the investigation into Hunter Biden is a cautionary tale of the abuse of prosecutorial power,” Lowell said.

Weiss remained at the Justice Department at the start of the Biden administration, having garnered bipartisan support when appointed U.S. attorney in Delaware during the first term of President Donald Trump. In 2023, he was designated as a special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland.

A report on Jack Smith’s special counsel inquiry into Trump’s attempts to maintain his position of power beyond his loss in the 2020 presidential election is also anticipated from the Justice Department.
