In the Los Angeles area, a number of large wildfires are causing death and destruction.
Due to strong winds and dry circumstances, a few wildfires that began on January 7 have grown significantly in size. By Monday night, almost 12,000 buildings and structures had been damaged, and 24 people had been killed. Over 190,000 people are under warnings and evacuation orders, while over a dozen people are still unaccounted for.

The Palisades Fire, the biggest of the fires, covers an area of about 37 square miles. That is more than half of Washington, D.C.’s total land area. The Eaton Fire, a second fire, has spread to cover more than 22 square kilometers.
