A shooting at a supermarket in Indiana on Monday night left three people dead, including the shooter, and two police officers wounded, according to local authorities.
At 5:30 p.m., police were called to the scene of a gunshot at Martin’s Supermarket, located in the city of Elkhart, approximately 15 miles east of South Bend, on the 500 block of East Jackson Boulevard.
When officers got there, they discovered two dead victims inside.
According to a news release from Elkhart Police, both of these people were declared dead at the scene.
According to the police, two officers were shot when they confronted the shooting suspect outside the store. The shooting suspect was shot and killed during the gunfight.
Both cops were taken to nearby medical facilities for assessment. As of Monday night, one was treated and discharged from the hospital, while the other is still there in a “fair but stable condition”.
According to the police, the public is not thought to be in any more danger.
In order to notify the family, the names of the culprit, victims, and participating cops were not made public.
The motive behind the shooting was not disclosed by the authorities. The investigation is being handled by the Elkhart County Homicide Unit, which is requesting that witnesses call them at 574-295-2825.
Pregnant woman Erin Swary told local television station WNDU that she heard gunfire while she was at the shop checking out.
Then there was a pop. To be honest, I mistook it for a balloon. Swary told the channel, “Call me crazy, but I thought it was a balloon.” I would estimate that there were six to eight additional gunfire after that, all of them consecutive.
Thus, I was just frozen on the ground. While I was down there, all I could think about was my children, even though I obviously didn’t want to run while there were still gunfire. “And I thought he would probably be gone or shot as well if he came around that corner,” she continued.
Dan Milanese, chief of the Elkhart Police Department, described the shooting as a “horrible situation.”
The anguish that a tragedy like this causes in our community is beyond words. According to him, the relatives of the victims, the responding officers, the families of the injured cops, and all of the witnesses to this terrible event are particularly affected by this pain. I would want to express my gratitude to the Indiana State Police and the Elkhart County Sheriff’s Office, two of our local law enforcement partners, for their help and support throughout this period. I kindly request that the community continue to remember and pray for everyone affected by this terrible incident.
“Our hearts are broken in Elkhart tonight,” Elkhart Mayor Rod Roberson stated in a statement. Please keep the victims, our two injured police officers, our brave first responders, and others present at the scene in your prayers.
On XMonday evening, Indiana Governor Mike Braun wrote: We are in contact with state and local law enforcement as information regarding the Elkhart incident comes to light. I’m praying for the victims and their families, as is Maureen.
