Less than twenty-four hours after declaring it would no longer accept shipments from China, the U.S. Postal Service has agreed to start receiving them again.
In a statement released Wednesday morning, it stated that “the Postal Service will continue accepting all international inbound mail and packages from China and Hong Kong Posts, effective February 5, 2025.” “The USPS and Customs and Border Protection are working closely together to implement an efficient collection mechanism for the new China tariffs to ensure the least disruption to package delivery.”
Following the Trump administration’s decision to impose a fresh wave of 10% tariffs on all items coming from China, the Postal Service had already said that it would no longer accept shipments from Hong Kong and China.
The initial notice had no effect on letters or apartments. Trump’s tariff decision terminated a so-called “de minimis” exception for Chinese items valued under $800, but the Postal Service did not provide a rationale for the shipment halt.
According to the Associated Press, a Chinese Foreign Ministry official had earlier stated that China will take the appropriate steps to safeguard its businesses and urged the United States to stop arbitrarily repressing Chinese firms and to quit politicizing trade and economic matters.
