The Social Security Administration (SSA) has taken significant steps to enhance the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program, benefiting countless individuals with disabilities. Congress has shown interest in revising these limits in the past, with proposals to adjust the asset cap from $2,000 to $3,000 for individuals and $3,000 to $4,500 for couples, indexing those amounts for inflation. The SSA stands ready to assist Congress as discussions on these matters progress.
Administrative Enhancements
While legislative changes await Congressional action, the SSA has implemented several administrative enhancements to the SSI program, effective immediately. These updates aim to simplify rules, lessen burdens, and support individuals with disabilities more effectively:
- In-Kind Support and Maintenance Exclusion: The SSA will no longer count food assistance from friends and family when determining eligibility. This change could increase monthly SSI payments by approximately $131 for over 90,000 individuals.
- Expansion of Rental Subsidy Exceptions: Previously limited to seven states, the rental subsidy exception will now apply nationwide, potentially increasing monthly SSI payments by about $132 for approximately 41,000 recipients.
- Public Assistance Household Redefinition: By adding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to the public assistance criteria, the SSA will simplify the process for individuals living in public assistance households. This modification may increase SSI payments for around 277,000 people.
