Alec Baldwin’s ‘Rust’ earns polite response at world premiere as Halyna Hutchins honored

Alec Baldwin’s Western film Rustre received a courteous reception during its contentious debut on Wednesday at the EnergaCamerimage festival in Toru, Poland, more than three years after cinematographer Halyna Hutchins died unintentionally on shoot.

The audience cheered during the movie’s final credits, and their cheers got louder as a tribute to Hutchins was shown. But before the credits rolled and before a Q&A with director Joel Souza—who was also hurt in the October 2021 shooting accident that happened during production in New Mexico—and cinematographer Bianca Cline, who finished the film, a good number of attendees exited the auditorium.

According to an event spokeswoman, Alec Baldwin, the producer and celebrity who was in charge of the prop pistol at the time of the mishap, was not permitted to attend the festival. Baldwin was accused of manslaughter, but the case was dropped since the prosecution had not produced any supporting documentation.

Both the spouse of the cinematographer, Matthew Hutchins, who was appointed an executive producer on Rust as part of the settlement agreement, and Hutchins’ mother, Olga Solovey, who is suing the production and Baldwin, did not attend.

Marek Yodicz, the director of Camerimage, asked the audience to stand for a moment of silence in honor of Hutchins as the premiere got underway. Hutchins’ friend, cinematographer Rachel Mason, who produced a documentary on the film’s completion, then gave a moving address.

She emphasized that the crew returned to the set following the disaster because of their love and devotion to Hutchins, saying, “I feel strongly that I need to make a statement about a very misunderstood film and the people who made it, who I believe are heroic people.”

The pain they had experienced was evident and palpable, akin to a war zone. And I asked, Why would you return to your most challenging emotional nightmare? “I said,” she said. And everyone’s reaction to me was the same. One thing sprang to mind when they heard that the movie Rust would benefit Halyna’s family: the fact that she has a son who is no longer able to have a mother. Furthermore, why wouldn’t they be present if they could help that young boy?

When it was announced last month that Rust would be screened at Camerimage, controversy sprang out. At the time, Ydowicz responded with a statement that included the following: “This screening is solely intended to honor Halyna’s work, talent, and artistic achievements.” Our goal is to respect and carry out Halyna’s and her family’s desires. Presenting Rust at EnergaCamerimage was Halyna’s dream, and her family also hopes it will come to pass.

Mason expressed her desire to understand Halyna’s true desires regarding the completion and release of Rust.

But you know what? She said I couldn’t ask her. I’ve spent the last three years trying to figure out what Halyna saw in Rust during the twelve days she spent working on the film. Did she enjoy this film? Why had she gone there?

After then, Souza and Cline went on stage to make their own moving speeches.

“Seeing people support Halyna and what we accomplished together is truly amazing,” Cline added. You will be seeing the world through Halyna’s eyes when you watch this movie today. As you see that today, I hope that you all have that in your hearts as well. You will get to experience her perspective of the world.

Souza was added. She probably enjoyed this spot much more than being on stage, and here we are in it. I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who came and dedicated a few hours of their day to honoring my friend’s art and talent. She was truly something.

With credits including 2019’s Darlin and 2020’s Archenemy and Blindfire, Hutchins was a rising star. Honorary membership in the America Society of Cinematographers was granted to her after her death. The Halyna Hutchins Memorial Scholarship Fund was also established by AFI.

Rust is the tale of a 13-year-old boy who, after his parents’ deaths in 1880s Wyoming, is left to care for himself and his younger brother. He then embarks on the run with his long-estranged grandfather after he is sentenced to hang for the unintentional murder of a local rancher.

Baldwin, the celebrity and producer who was holding the prop gun at the time of the tragedy, was charged with manslaughter after Hutchins died, but the case was dropped because the prosecution had not turned over evidence.

Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who is serving an 18-month sentence for Hutchins’ death, requested a new trial after this ruling, but the judge rejected the request and affirmed the verdict.
