CEO makes largest-ever donation to ‘undervalued’ U.S. Soccer women’s and girls programs

Michele Kang, a philanthropist and businesswoman, recently made a landmark commitment to women’s soccer.

U.S. Soccer announced Tuesday that Kang, owner of the professional soccer team Washington Spirit, has donated $30 million to the organization’s women’s and girls’ initiatives. It’s the biggest gift a woman has ever given to women’s soccer, girls’ soccer, and the soccer organization.

Kang expressed her hope that the donation will encourage other benefactors to support women’s sports in a press release.

According to Kang, women’s sports have been neglected and underappreciated for far too long.

According to the press release, Kang’s donation will enable the organization to increase the number of camps it presently operates, reaching six per age group, with a focus on sponsoring those for women and girls.

In order to improve the number of players recruited into the young national team by a factor of twelve and create 100,000 opportunities for female players, the monies will also be used to expand U.S. Soccer’s digital talent discovery tool. The announcement also stated that the donation will double the current number of female professionals by adding 70,000 new female trainers and referees.

According to Cindy Parlow Cone, president of U.S. Soccer, Michele Kang’s gift will revolutionize soccer for women and girls in the United States. It will affect generations of female athletes, coaches, and officials in our sport.

In 2022, Kang became the first woman of color to own a team in the U.S. National Women’s Soccer League. She is also the founder and CEO of Kynisca, a global organization devoted to women’s soccer. She also owns the London City Lionesses in England and the Olympique Lyonnais women’s soccer team in France.

Kang told CNBC that she realized right away that there was a lot of potential in the sport when she first started playing it two years ago.

Kang told CNBC, “I was really surprised that so few people had seen that.”

She expressed her desire to continue supporting teams around the world and motivating females in numerous nations to the outlet.

Kang stated that this is also about ensuring that all young girls worldwide understand that this is not merely a French, English, or American issue. I’m going to bring the same infrastructure, technology, and capabilities to those countries when I establish a team there so they can see that I can become the next Alex Morgan if I work hard enough.
