Fort Mil Swimmer Dominic Impens Named Scholastic All-American

Only 1,790 student-athletes nationwide are recognized as Scholastic All-Americans, and Dominic Impens, a superb swimmer from Fort Mill High School, has been designated one. Impens is one of just 24 South Carolina students to receive this honor in 2024, which honors individuals who achieve excellence in both academics and athletics.

Maintaining a GPA of 3.5 or above on a 4.0 scale throughout the qualifying year and earning a junior national swim qualifying time or higher are prerequisites for this esteemed award. Impens has proven his extraordinary dedication to the classroom and the pool by going above and beyond these exacting criteria.

The Fort Mill High School Boys Swim Team, who placed second at the South Carolina High School League State Championship event, is led by Impens, a resident of Tega Cay. In addition, he plays with the YMCA of Upper Palmetto Rays, where he is still a standout athlete. Impens received the prestigious Palmetto’s Finest Award, which is given to swimmers who win four gold medals in a single event, at the state championship tournament. He shared this honor with Turner Wiand, a teammate and one of his closest friends.

Impens further solidified his legacy by setting a new state mark in the 100-yard breaststroke, smashing a record that had been in place since 2007 with an incredible performance of 56.15 seconds.

Cindy VanBuskirk, swim coach at Fort Mill High School, praised Impens’ accomplishments, saying: “This is a well-deserved honor and recognition for Dominic.” He is incredibly committed and hardworking in both the academics and competitive swimming. During his high school seasons, I had a great time coaching this excellent student-athlete. Dominic will continue to be successful in and out of the water, I’m sure of it! I’m excited to follow his future pursuits.

Jon Big Show Mengering, Head Coach and Executive Director of Competitive Aquatics for the YMCA of Upper Palmetto, echoed similar sentiments:Given the time requirements and dedication required to excel in both the pool and the classroom, this is truly an honor of the highest order from USA Swimming. Dominic is an incredible young person, and his ability to balance expectations and performance in the classroom and the pool is truly inspiring. Dominic is an important member of our Rays program at the YMCA of Upper Palmetto and displays that commitment to his academics and swimming through his hard work, diligence, and leadership every day. For this amazing achievement and accolades, Dominic has my utmost admiration.

Impens Scholastic All-American recognition is a testament to his tireless dedication to both academic excellence and athletic success. His accomplishments bring pride to Fort Mill High School and the Tega Cay community, setting an inspiring example for future student-athletes.
