Salad topping recalled in 20 states over wheat allergen contamination

A tortilla chip salad topper that was distributed in 20 states is being recalled by a food business after it was found to have a wheat allergy.

The Food and Drug Administration announced in a statement on Friday that Sugar Foods is recalling 3.5-ounce bags of Fresh Gourmet Tortilla Strips Santa Fe Style. The pouches’ best-by date is June 20, 2025, and their UPC code is 7 87359 17504 6.

“People who have a wheat allergy or severe sensitivity to wheat run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume the product,” the release from the FDA stated.

According to the FDA, no illnesses have been reported.

A customer called Sugar Foods on Tuesday to report that their bag of tortilla strips really contained crispy onion strips, which the FDA stated contained wheat, an ingredient not mentioned on the package.

Distribution centers in Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, North Carolina, New Jersey, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Utah, Virginia, and Washington received the recalled Tortilla Strips between September 30, 2024, and November 11, 2024.

Customers who purchased the recalled tortilla strips have two options: discard them or return them to the store for a complete refund.

This month, there have been two recalls, shortly followed by this one.

Due to a potential E. coli infection, organic carrots that were sold at large supermarket chains including Wegmans and Trader Joe’s were recalled.

A listeria epidemic linked to ready-to-eat beef supplied by Yu Shang Food, Inc. of Spartanburg, South Carolina, resulted in the death of one infant and the illness of ten others.
