A recall of roughly 72,240 pounds of ready-to-eat beef and poultry items has been issued by Spartanburg-based Yu Shang Food Inc. because of possible Listeria monocytogenes contamination. This recall comes after a terrible event in which a baby in California died and at least ten other people in four states became ill due to the outbreak.
Building on a November 9, 2024, initial recall, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced the new recall on November 21, 2024. Products manufactured prior to October 28, 2024, such as chicken feet, duck neck, cattle shank, and swine hock, are among those impacted. These goods were sold online as well as supplied to retail establishments across the country.
When Listeria monocytogenes was found in the products and the production environment during normal FSIS testing in October, the contamination was identified. Consequently, all items with establishment numbers P-46684 or EST. M46684 inside the USDA mark of inspection have been recalled by Yu Shang Food Inc.
Nine of the 11 affected people needed to be hospitalized, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Both twins died, although only one of them tested positive for listeria. The deceased infant was one of the twins. All of the affected people identify as Asian, and cases have been reported in California, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois.
Customers are advised to look for the recalled products in their freezers and refrigerators and either return them to the retailer or throw them out. To avoid cross-contamination, it is also advised to completely wipe and disinfect any surfaces that may have come into touch with these goods.
A bacterium called Listeria monocytogenesis can cause listeriosis, a deadly infection that is especially dangerous for elderly people, people with compromised immune systems, pregnant women, and newborns. From minor symptoms like fever and muscular aches to more serious ones like headaches, stiff neck, disorientation, loss of balance, and convulsions, symptoms can vary widely. Listeria can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, early delivery, or potentially fatal infections for the unborn child in pregnant women.
This epidemic comes after a listeria outbreak earlier this year that was connected to Boar’s Head deli meats and caused 61 illnesses and 10 fatalities in 19 states.
Customers should visit the FSIS website or get in touch with Yu Shang Food Inc. directly for additional details about the recall and a comprehensive list of items that are impacted. After swallowing the recalled items, anyone exhibiting listeriosis symptoms should get medical help right away.
