(WNY News Now) Despite the valiant efforts of Syracuse firefighters and emergency services, 53-year-old David Jones lost his life on Saturday night in a horrific fire on Burnet Avenue in Syracuse, New York.
The Onondaga County 911 Center reported a fire at a two-story, wood-frame, multi-family home, prompting the dispatch of crews at 6:03 p.m. Within minutes, firefighters from Station 9 arrived to find the second level heavily engulfed in flames and a trapped person.
Firefighters found Jones unresponsive in a second-floor apartment after battling extreme heat and smoke. In light of the dangerous circumstances, they carried out a risky rescue by using a ladder to carry the victim through a second-story window. After performing advanced lifesaving techniques and performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, AMR’s emergency medical technicians took Jones to Upstate University Hospital, where he passed away from his wounds.
Although an investigation is still ongoing, investigators have already concluded that the incident was caused by accident. The building’s second floor was severely damaged by the fire.
The majority of the fire was put out by firefighters within eighteen minutes of their arrival, and hot patches were quickly completely contained. Together with Syracuse Police, AMR, National Grid, and the American Red Cross, 47 firefighters helped with the response. Thankfully, there were no reports of emergency responders being hurt.
The only person known to have died in the fire is David Jones, who was born on November 1, 1971. The incident’s circumstances are still being examined by authorities.
