Aaron Rodgers, the quarterback for the New York Jets, stated on Tuesday that if he plays next season, he would love to stay with the team.
Although the 40-year-old Rodgers did not promise to play again in 2025, he stated that the Jets would be his first option if he did.
On ESPN’s “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers addressed reports that he would like to play elsewhere by saying, “As far as my future goes, I haven’t told anybody in my life that I want to play in 2025 and not on the Jets.”
“I’m not jumping off ship,” he continued. New York would be my first choice, but I’m not even sure whether I want to play yet.
Given his individual and the team’s difficulties thus far this season, Rodgers’ future in the NFL and with New York has come under scrutiny.
In 2024, the three-time MVP has his lowest passer rating since he started playing full-time in 2008 and is averaging the fewest yards per attempt of his career. Additionally, the Jets have lost seven of their previous eight games, dropping them to 3-8.
Diana Russini of The Athletic stated on November 23 that she believed Rodgers wanted to play again the following season, but not with New York.
According to Rodgers, his choice will be partially influenced by who will be in charge of the front office and coaching the squad the next season. The Jets sacked general manager Joe Douglas last month after firing head coach Robert Saleh in October.
Before the 2023 season, Rodgers was acquired by New York, although his stint has been disappointing.
He missed the remainder of the season after tearing his Achilles after playing only four plays the previous season. Rodgers missed a required practice in June in preparation for a trip to Egypt, for which he was penalized for an unexcused absence. The Jets are currently in 12th position in the AFC after 11 games this season.
For the upcoming season, New York owes Rodgers $23.5 million. The Jets would have to pay $25.5 million against the salary cap if they were to cut or trade Rodgers at the end of the season. The quarterback would provide New York $9.5 million in cap room if he were cut or moved after June 1.
The Jets will meet the Seattle Seahawks on Sunday.
