Biden says Trump’s tariff threat against Canada and Mexico is ‘counterproductive’

On Thursday, President Joe Biden denounced President-elect Donald Trump’s declaration that he would impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, calling the remarks “counterproductive.”

“I hope he rethinks it, and I think it’s a counterproductive thing to do,” Biden claimed in response to a reporter’s inquiry about his thoughts on Trump’s declaration.

“The last thing we need to do is begin to screw up those relationships,” he stated. Biden made these remarks while visiting a fire station in Nantucket, Massachusetts, on Thanksgiving Day.

In a post on Truth Social on Monday, Trump stated that imposing a 25% tariff on Canada and Mexico will be one of his first executive orders. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative reports that Mexico and Canada rank second and third in terms of the number of items they supply to the United States. The largest importer of commodities from China is the United States.

“This Tariff will remain in effect until such time as Drugs, in particular Fentanyl, and all Illegal Aliens stop this Invasion of our Country!” Trump stated in the post.

A request for comment on Biden’s comments was not immediately answered by the president-elect’s transition staff.

Trump repeatedly pledged to increase tariffs, particularly on China, during his campaign.Nonetheless, other economists have questioned the prospect of high tariffs, claiming that consumers will eventually bear the expense.

Trump wrote on Truth Social on Wednesday that he had a “wonderful conversation” with Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, and that “she has agreed to stop Migration through Mexico, and into the United States, effectively closing our Southern Border.”

But according to Sheinbaum’s description of the exchange, she took notice of Mexico’s stance, which is “not to close borders.”

“I informed President Trump during our meeting about Mexico’s all-encompassing approach to addressing the migration issue while upholding human rights,” she stated in Spanish on X. We restate that Mexico’s stance is to create bridges between the people and the government rather than to close borders.

In a post to Xon on Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau stated that he had discussed trade with the United States with his nation’s premiers.

“Our focus: Canadian jobs, securing the border, and building on our strong partnership with the United States,” he stated.
