Chicago Bears fire coach Matt Ebeflus a day after disastrous Thanksgiving Day game

Less than 24 hours after a slew of mental errors occurred in the last 30 seconds of his team’s Thanksgiving Day loss to Detroit, the Chicago Bears dismissed coach Matt Eberflus on Friday.

According to General Manager Ryan Poles, Eberflus was fired after meeting with Bears Chairman George McCaskey and team president Kevin Warren.

After speaking with George and Kevin this morning, we told Matt that we had decided to take a fresh approach to our football team’s leadership and head coaching role, Poles said in a statement.

I appreciate Matt’s diligence, professionalism, and commitment to our company. We are appreciative of his dedication to the Chicago Bears and wish him and his family the very best in their future endeavors.

In a game that concluded in complete disarray, Chicago lost to the Detroit Lions on Thursday, 23–20.

The Bears were in position to attempt a game-winning field goal after driving into Lions territory.

However, the disorganized Bears let nearly all of those valuable seconds to pass after a sack with 32 seconds remaining put Chicago ahead. As time ran out, they attempted one final play, a deep, fluttering pass that landed harmlessly incomplete.

Chicago could have played several plays to tie or win the game, but the losing Bears left the field with an unspent timeout in their pocket.

Thomas Brown, the offensive coordinator, was promoted to interim head coach.
