According to a coroner’s office official on Friday, an Alabama A&M football player who suffered a head injury during a game last month has passed away.
The 20-year-old Medrick Burnett Jr. sustained an injury on October 26 during the Bulldogs’ yearly Magic City Classic football game against Alabama State. After moving from Grambling to Alabama A&M, the redshirt freshman linebacker participated in seven games this season.
According to Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office deputy coroner AJ Clifton, Burnett was declared dead on Wednesday. Clifton stated that authorities intended to issue a statement on Saturday, but he declined to provide details such as Burnett’s cause and manner of death.
After mistakenly stating in a statement that Burnett had passed away, university officials on Wednesday issued a reversal.
Following the removal of the online notification, which was initially suggested by a close relative of Burnett’s death on Tuesday night, the university’s athletic administration described the initial remark as an unfortunate incident.
An inquiry from NBC News was not immediately answered by Alabama A&M.
