After Hurricane Helene flattened the landscape, a small county in western North Carolina has been struggling to regain its equilibrium. On Sunday, nearly a dozen foot bridges washed away, leaving some residents without access to emergency services, according to officials.
Bridges constructed by volunteers to give people emergency access during the Sept. 26 hurricane were washed away by more than three inches of rain, according to Avery County Manager Phillip Barrier.
