Apple launches its ChatGPT integration with Siri

On Wednesday, Apple published software upgrades for the iPhone, iPad, and Mac that contain the long-awaited ChatGPT integration with Siri.

Users that ask complex inquiries to Siri activate the ChatGPT integration. Siri requests permission to access the OpenAI service when a user asks a question that Apple’s algorithms determines is more appropriate for ChatGPT. Apple claims that OpenAI won’t store requests and that privacy safeguards have been incorporated into the feature. The GPT-4o model from OpenAI is used in the integration.

Although customers can purchase updated versions of ChatGPT through Apple, they do not require an OpenAI account to utilize the ChatGPT integration. ChatGPT is also accessible to users via some text menus.

For Apple, which is depending on Apple Intelligence to spearhead the marketing effort for the iPhone 16 series, the release of iOS 18.2 marks a significant turning point. The company’s AI suite is called Apple Intelligence. The ChatGPT integration was initially revealed by Apple in June.

In October, Apple published the initial version of Apple Intelligence. These featured notification summaries, a new Siri design that illuminates the entire phone screen, and writing tools that can edit or proofread text.

Siri will get major enhancements, including the ability to act inside apps, in the company’s upcoming Apple Intelligence update, which is scheduled for release next year.

Many investors think Apple Intelligence’s feature additions will increase iPhone sales, spur an upgrade cycle, and maybe solidify Apple’s position as a pioneer in consumer-focused AI.

Since it exposes OpenAI’s most significant product to millions of iPhone users, the integration is also a significant win for the company. The financial parameters of the deal have not been revealed by Apple or OpenAI.

While ChatGPT integration mostly uses cloud servers, users must have an iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Pro, or any iPhone 16 model to install and use Apple Intelligence. In the Settings app’s General section, iPhone owners can enable software updates.

Users who have not yet enabled Apple Intelligence can create a waitlist via the settings app after updating to the most recent version of the Apple software. The program is usually made available to users the same day. For the service to function, their phones will need to download big files, such as Apple’s AI models.

Apple’s Playground image-generating tool, which may produce images based on people or prompts, and Image Wand, which lets users eliminate objects or imperfections from photos, are both included in the Monday updates.
