At least 86 dead, 55 injured in Nigerian gasoline tanker explosion

Nigeria’s Abuja Nigeria’s emergency response agency reported on Sunday that 86 people had died as a result of a gasoline truck explosion in the country’s north-central region.

Early on Saturday morning, the explosion occurred close to the Suleja region of Niger state after someone tried to use a generator to move gasoline from a downed oil tanker into another truck.

Both the people transferring the gasoline and any onlookers were killed when the explosion was caused by the fuel transfer.

The National Emergency Management Agency’s Hussaini Isah informed the Associated Press that three hospitals in the Suleja region are treating an additional 55 injured individuals.

Some folks were reduced to ashes by fire. How do we obtain that number? the official stated, suggesting that there may be more people killed than 86. Without forensics, we won’t be able to determine the precise amount.

A crowd had collected around the site, including bystanders, those trying to scoop fuel, and people snapping pictures, which is why so many people were killed in the blast, according to Isah.

Since President Bola Tinubu’s administration eliminated gasoline subsidies more than a year ago in an effort to redirect funds toward more development-oriented initiatives, the cost of gasoline has skyrocketed in Africa’s most populous nation. But the policy has resulted in unfavorable consequences.

In Nigeria, it’s typical for people to scoop gasoline from a downed tanker because they regard it as a chance to obtain free goods that they can consume or resell for a profit.
