(WNY News Now) New York Attorney General Letitia James vowed to take legal action to defend immigrant rights and condemned President Trump’s executive order that sought to terminate birthright citizenship, claiming it was a clear violation of the Constitution.
NEW YORKLetitia James, the attorney general of New York, has voiced her opposition to President Donald Trump’s new executive order that seeks to abolish birthright citizenship in the US. People born in the United States are automatically granted citizenship under the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, which guarantees birthright citizenship.
Attorney General James emphasized the illegality of the executive order and reiterated the constitutional safeguards that were established more than 156 years ago in her comments, which may be viewed below:
The US Constitution has made it abundantly evident for more than 156 years that everyone born in the US is a US citizen. No provision of our Constitution, including the 14th Amendment, can be disregarded by President Trump.
We are ready to defend the integrity of our Constitution by using all available legal means to combat this executive order, which is nothing more than an attempt to sow division and fear.
I will always defend the legal rights of immigrants, their families, and their communities in my capacity as Attorney General. We are examining our legal alternatives.
