Minnesota man found guilty of murdering mother of his children after allegedly warning she could end up like Gabby Petito

Minnesota jurors on Thursday convicted a man for murdering his girlfriend after he'd warned she could end up like Gabby Petito, the vlogger who in 2021 was also slain by her boyfriend. After nine hours of deliberations in Mankato, 30-year-old Adam Fravel was found guilty of the first-degree murder and other charges in connection to the killing of Madeline "Maddi" Kingsbury, 26. The victim vanished on March 31, 2023 after dropping off her and Fravel’s two children at daycare in Winona. Her body was found on June 7 last year in a wooded area near Mabel, and Fravel was arrested. “As for the verdict today, of course we’re glad of it (but) it’s a bit of a Pyrrhic victory. We’re not going to get Madeline back,” the victim’s father David Kinsgbury told reporters outside court. “F...

Trump re-election sparks interest in South Korea’s ‘4B’ movement among American women

The election of Donald Trump as the next U.S. president has triggered a surge of social media posts and internet search interest in South Korea’s fringe feminist "4B" movement, which calls on women to refrain from dating, having sex with men, having kids and marrying men. Across TikTok, dozens of American women disappointed by Tuesday’s election results have posted videos stating their intention to participate in their own version of the 4B trend. There were over 500,000 search inquires for “ 4B movement ” on Google over the span of 48 hours this week, and it became one of the top trending topics on the online search engine. The 4B trend, which began in South Korea 2018 in the wake of the #MeToo movement , has become a way for some women to protest misogyny, gender disc...

Israel’s Netanyahu appoints new ambassador to United States

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu appointed U.S.-born Yechiel Leiter, an official who previously served as chief of staff in the finance ministry, as the next Israeli ambassador to the United States. “Yechiel Leiter is a highly capable diplomat, an eloquent speaker, and possesses a deep understanding of American culture and politics,” Netanyahu said in a statement. His appointment was also welcomed by Yisrael Ganz, the head of the Yesha Council, an umbrella organisation representing councils of Jewish settlements in the Israeli-occupied West Bank , a territory Palestinians want as part of a future state. Ganz said Leiter, who lives in the Gush Etzion settlement area, as “a key partner in English-language advocacy for Judea and Samaria”, a name used by many Is...

What Trump’s victory could mean for the future of abortion rights

The Summary After an election in which abortion rights were a major issue, focus is turning to the policy changes Donald Trump could make as president. Trump has said that he wouldn’t sign a federal abortion ban and that states should decide their own policies. But experts pointed to ways a new Trump administration could restrict abortion nationwide without explicitly banning it. President-elect Donald Trump’s victory in an election in which abortion rights were a heavy focus raises major questions about what might come next for abortion access in the U.S. During the final stages of his campaign, Trump said he thought states should determine their own abortion policies. But his position on the issue has varied widely — in a March interview, he signaled ...

Chuck Todd: This Democratic defeat — and the rise of Trump 2.0 — was a decade in the making

There’s something about an election that is both cleansing — especially for my pre-Election Day email inbox — and, most importantly, clarifying. It’s also the ultimate test of lots of theories of the case — all sorts of them. Which gender gap would matter more? Which side had the best campaign tactically? Which one had the better message? How much does the basic fundamental rule of politics — the perceived state of the economy — trump everything? What matters more: class or identity? Small shifts of the electorate, which turn defeats into victories and vice versa, can either shatter or cement various pieces of conventional wisdom based on the various theories of what moves the electorate in one direction or the other. Note: Thank you for visiting our website! We strive to keep you in...

Hurricane Rafael moves across Gulf of Mexico as a rare major November storm while Cuba recovers

Rafael was moving west across the Gulf of Mexico on Friday morning as the first major hurricane in the Gulf in November for almost 40 years, bringing the threat of life-threatening conditions to the southern United States coastline. Forecasters said the storm could cause dangerous surf and riptides across the whole Gulf region in the coming days, after causing havoc in Cuba where millions are still without power. As of 4 a.m. ET, Rafael was 585 miles east of the mouth of the Rio Grande with sustained wind speeds of 120 mph, making it a Category 3 hurricane, moving west at a rate of 9 mph, the National Hurricane Center said. Rafael is now tied with Hurricane Kate in 1985 as the strongest storms recorded in the Gulf. The storm is expected to weaken throughout the weekend, ...

Israel celebrates, Ukraine frets: What Trump’s win means for U.S. allies at war

LONDON — Donald Trump ’s return to power could dramatically alter the course of the wars raging in the Middle East and Europe . From the rubble of Israel’s deadly military campaigns in the Gaza Strip and southern Lebanon to the battlefields of eastern Ukraine where Russian forces are advancing, the United States’ election has for months hung over these conflicts involving allies dependent on support from Washington. Celebrations quickly rang out in Israel on Wednesday, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu among the first world leaders to congratulate Trump on what he labeled “history’s greatest comeback” — a jubilant reaction that may fuel concerns of further escalation as the country presses its offensive in northern Gaza and prepar...

Jan. 6 rioter targeted by ‘fedsurrection’ conspiracy theories gets 8 years in prison

WASHINGTON — A Jan. 6 rioter who was the subject of right-wing conspiracy theories suggesting he was a plant who worked with law enforcement was sentenced to eight years in prison Thursday, among the longest prison sentences given in connection with the U.S. Capitol attack. Zachary Alam , who wore a red “Make America Great Again” hat under a black and tan fur-lined hat on Jan. 6, 2021, was often at the front of the mob during the attack and entered the building through a broken window. Once he was inside, he assaulted officers and smashed windows leading into the House Speaker’s Lobby just before another Donald Trump supporter was shot, prosecutors said. He was convicted of eight felonies and several misdemeanors in September after a jury trial. At his sentencing hearing ...

FDA proposes ending use of decongestant found in many cold, allergy medicines

The Food and Drug Administration on Thursday proposed ending the use of a common ingredient found in many popular over-the-counter cold and allergy medications. The agency said an extensive review of available data determined that the ingredient, oral phenylephrine, doesn’t actually relieve nasal congestion. It comes more than a year after advisors to the FDA unanimously reached the same conclusion . Based on the data, “we are taking this next step in the process to propose removing oral phenylephrine because it is not effective as a nasal decongestant,” Dr. Patrizia Cavazzoni, director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a release. The FDA said the proposed order is not based on safety concerns and not final yet, which means c...
