Pete Hegseth’s FBI background check does not include interviews with key women from his past

According to three people with direct knowledge of the report's contents, the FBI background check on Pete Hegseth, President-elect Donald Trump's choice for defense secretary, does not include interviews with Hegseth's ex-wives or the woman who accused Hegseth of sexual assault in a California hotel room in 2017. Two other people with knowledge of the FBI background check process said that interviewing current and previous spouses is typical procedure. However, it also depends on the interviewees' participation, and it's unclear if the FBI made an effort to reach out to them. Two sources claim that although Democrats on the Senate Armed Services Committee, which will hear Hegseth's confirmation hearing on Tuesday, also contacted Hegseth's ex-wives' attorneys, they did not provide the comm...

Texas governor orders flags to be raised to full staff for Trump’s inauguration

Despite a White House directive that U.S. flags fly at half-staff until late January in remembrance of the late President Jimmy Carter, Texas Governor Greg Abbott on Monday ordered that flags at the state Capitol and other state government buildings be raised to full-staff for President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration next week. In a statement, Abbott, a Republican and ardent supporter of Trump, stated, "While we honor the service of a former President, we must also celebrate the service of an incoming President and the bright future ahead for the United States of America." In accordance with the U.S. flag law, which stipulates that flags shouldn't be raised to full height when a president passes away, President Joe Biden issued the proclamation on December 29, the day Carter passed away...

Two prisoners can’t legally object to Biden’s death row commutations, DOJ argues

The Justice Department argued Monday in a court filing that two inmates who have taken the extraordinary step of asking a federal judge to revoke their death row commutations granted by President Joe Biden should be denied because the act of leniency does not violate the Constitution. Len Davis, 60, and Shannon Agofsky, 53, are detained at a federal prison in Terre Haute, Indiana, where the United States government executes prisoners. Agofsky and Davis filed emergency motions seeking an injunction to block the change one week after Biden announced he was commuting the sentences of 37 of the 40 inmates on federal death row to life in prison without the possibility of parole. They claimed the change could impact their appeals in light of their initial convictions' claims of innocence. The U....
