Officials confirmed Monday that a 73-year-old Great Smoky Mountains National area volunteer who had been missing for several decades was discovered dead over the weekend while hiking in the area. According to a press release from the National Park Service, Ann Houghton of Jackson County, North Carolina, was discovered on Sunday at around 1:53 p.m. ET.
